Identity & Agency

Identity, Agency & Capable Competence

At Eungai Preschool we view children as capable, eager and resourceful learners who carry within them the seeds of their emerging identity.

Our role is not to shape children into predetermined outcomes but to create the relational and physical conditions in which they can discover – and construct – themselves.

This learning outcome speaks directly to our belief that identity, agency, and competence are intertwined threads that grow when children feel trusted respected and empowered.

A strong sense of identity begins with belonging. Children at Eungai experience themselves as valued members of a community where their stories, cultures, temperaments and ideas matter. We honour each child’s uniqueness, providing them with authentic opportunities to express who they are and how they see the world.

Through meaningful relationships with educators and peers, children receive consistent messages of acceptance and worthiness. These experiences form the bedrock of self-confidence and emotional resilience.

Agency is nurtured every time children are offered real choices, autonomy and voice. Whether selecting materials, directing their play, negotiating roles or choosing how long they remain with an experience, children learn that their decisions hold weight.

Educators observe closely and respond with sensitivity – following children’s cues, slowing down the pace, and creating gentle invitations rather than directives. In these moments children experience themselves as the authors of their own learning, capable of influencing their environment and shaping their day.

At Eungai Preschool children ultimately come to see themselves as capable, confident and powerful contributors. They learn that their ideas matter, that their actions have impact, and that they possess an inner strength that will continue to grow.

In constructing their identity with agency and competence, they leave our preschool with the self belief that they can meet challenges, embrace new possibilities, and navigate the wider world with confidence.
