Our Philosophy
At Eungai Preschool, we believe childhood is a precious time, full of curiosity, discovery and joy. Our role is to nurture each child so they can build strong, positive relationships with themselves, with others and with the world around them.
We guide children as they grow into confident, compassionate citizens.
Our philosophy is grounded in four key values:
Belonging
Children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and part of something bigger than themselves.
Inspired by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we foster a strong sense of belonging – to place, to family, and to our preschool community. It’s from this secure base that children feel confident to explore, learn, and connect.
Central to this learning outcome is our commitment to an anti-bias curriculum, which ensures that every child experiences inclusion, representation and dignity. Through stories, conversations, resources and educator practice, children are exposed to diversity in meaningful and celebratory ways.
They learn that people differ in culture, language, family structure, abilities and life experience – and that these differences enrich our community. Anti-bias practice encourages children to recognise injustice, ask questions, advocate for fairness and challenge stereotypes. This builds the foundations of ethical citizenship from the earliest years.

Being
We honour childhood as a time for being – not rushing.
Our days are slow and intentional, allowing children to immerse themselves in play, follow their curiosity, and discover their inner world at their own pace. Learning unfolds naturally in environments shaped by the children’s interests and energy.
A sense of wonder is cultivated through environments that invite discovery. Whether standing beneath towering gums, tracing water channels in the sand, examining insect habitats or manipulating loose parts, children encounter experiences that spark curiosity.
These are not ‘activities’ but open ended provocations that encourage then to look closely, wonder ‘what if?’, and follow the thread of their thinking. Wonder fuels engagement; it makes learning joyful and deeply meaningful.
Respect
Respect is at the core of how we relate – to ourselves, each other, and the world.
In our inclusive, diverse community, children learn to value different perspectives and develop confidence in their own. We model kindness, empathy and cooperation so that children feel empowered to navigate relationships with understanding and grace.
Respect is also cultivated through the ways we speak with and about children. We use language that honours their autonomy, ideas and emotions. We listen deeply and follow their thinking. When children experience such respect they internalise the message ‘my voice matters; other people’s voices matter too’.
From this grows an intrinsic motivation to treat peers with care, negotiate fairly and participate collaboratively.

Play
Play is where learning comes to life.
Through play, children engage their bodies, minds and imaginations. They solve problems, express emotions, and experiment with ideas – all while forming meaningful relationships with peers and educators.
Challenge
What we learn in childhood – how to navigate hard things, and our sometimes overwhelming emotions about them – gives us the skills to negotiate the ups and downs of life.
We aim to grow your child’s mind, body and emotional intelligence by seeking opportunities to extend your child just beyond their comfort zone so they can enjoy the sense of achievement resulting in stretching themself.
Building strong Foundations
Like a well-built home, childhood needs strong foundations.
In the play of childhood we have an opportunity to affect the shape of the adult to evolve. Not by moulding but by allowing. Not by forcing but by nurturing, engaging, enjoying.
Once the children have gone home, full of the day’s experiences, we clean up and regroup as a team to uncover and share our learnings. And we set out the pathways and tools for the next day’s explorations of themselves and others.
By the time your child is ready for school, they are deeply aware of their strengths, confident in who they are, and ready to take on life’s next big adventure with courage and joy.
